Artist Statement

These are not the pictures of a big American road trip, a photo reportage, a model shoot or an event. For me, photography is everyday life and the wonderful opportunity to perceive and capture what is happening around me.

Primarily, photography is about what you see, and what it means for you: what do I like, what moves me, and what do I see in it? The meaning of an image is always personal and individual. Even if a photo meets all the criteria of the photographic craft and art, it can still be meaningless to many people. It is similar to a story: even though we read the same words, we all understand a story somehow differently; its meaning for the reader is a personal experience.

Photography can show something, but it gives us little information about the how or why. Often, omitting and withholding is an important decision when taking photos. It not only reduces complexity, but it allows you consciously to decide which information and aesthetics you want to convey with the photo and which space you give the viewer for interpretation. In my photographs, I don't want to simply show you what you already know: I love to leave a gap for an untold story, for your imagination and fantasy.

There is a widespread belief in photography that images should be self-explanatory without the need for a title or a description. However, I strongly believe there are also photographs and series of photographs that benefit from the use of text. It creates another dimension for understanding and interpretation and can be a great way of telling a story. This interaction between image and text gives me great inspiration, and I look for such connections in my everyday life.

But now you ask yourself, why should anyone care about what I see in my everyday life? The answer is very simple: even if pictures and their meaning are always personal, they still give an insight into another world, a new perspective, the possibility of understanding and interpretation. I would like to invite you to look at the pictures and read the words on this website. Don't expect anything, just try to see and find something for you in the pictures. In the best case, my photography can do no more than that.

Dies sind nicht die Bilder eines großen amerikanischen Roadtrips, einer Fotoreportage, eines Model Shootings oder eines Events. Fotografie ist für mich der Alltag und die wundervolle Möglichkeit, das was um mich herum passiert wahrzunehmen und festzuhalten. 

Vordergründig geht es bei der Fotografie darum was man sieht, aber noch wichtiger ist, wie ich einen Moment oder eine Szene, die ich beobachte, gestalten kann und welche Bedeutung sie für mich hat: was gefällt mir, was bewegt mich, was sehe ich darin. 

Die Bedeutung eines Bildes ist immer persönlich und individuell. Auch wenn ein Foto allen Kriterien des fotografischen Handwerkes und der Kunst gerecht wird, kann es doch für viele Menschen bedeutungslos sein. Es ist ähnlich wie mit einer Geschichte: Obwohl wir dieselben Wörter lesen, verstehen wir eine Geschichte doch alle etwas anders, ist ihre Bedeutung für den Leser eine persönliche Erfahrung.

Die Fotografie kann etwas zeigen, aber sie gibt uns wenig Informationen über das wie oder warum. Oft ist gerade das Weglassen und Vorenthalten eine wichtige Entscheidung beim Fotografieren. Damit reduziert sich nicht nur die Komplexität, sondern man kann auch ganz bewusst entscheiden, welche Information und Ästhetik mit dem Foto transportiert werden soll und welchen Raum man dem Betrachter für Interpretationen gibt. In meinen Fotos möchte ich Ihnen nicht nur das zeigen, was sie schon kennen: Ich möchte einen Spielraum lassen für eine nicht beendete Geschichte, für Ihre Vorstellungskraft und Fantasie.

In der Fotografie gibt es die weitverbreitete Ansicht, dass Bilder selbsterklärend sein sollten und keinen Titel oder Beschreibungen brauchen. Ich denke, dass Bilder zusammen mit Texten eine vielfältige Interaktion ermöglichen und eine eigene Dimension schaffen. Diese Interaktion zwischen Bild und Text gibt mir eine große Inspiration und ich suche nach solchen Verbindungen in meinem Alltag. 

Aber jetzt fragen Sie sich, warum sollte das, was ich in meinem Alltag sehe, jemanden interessieren? Die Antwort ist ganz einfach: Auch wenn Bilder und ihre Bedeutung immer persönlich sind, geben sie doch einen Einblick in eine andere Welt, eine neue Perspektive, die Möglichkeit zur Interpretation. Ich möchte Sie einladen die Bilder und Texte auf dieser Website zu betrachten. Erwarten Sie nichts. Versuchen Sie einfach in den Bildern für sich selbst etwas zu sehen. Mehr kann meine Fotografie im Besten Fall nicht tun.
